The overflow connection for a septic-connected greywater system routes back to your home's main drain line (before it enters the septic tank), not directly to the drain field.   • Antibacterial agents: Triclosan, quaternary ammonium compounds (quats), and bleach kill septic bacteria. Even when directed to the landscape greywater system, some of these compounds wash back into the septic via overflow loads. Avoid antibacterial laundry products entirely when on septic.
  • Chlorine bleach: Harmful both to septic bacteria and soil biology. Bleach loads should always go to septic โ€” but minimize bleach use overall when on a septic system.
  • High-phosphate products: Rare in residential detergents since the ban, but still present in some commercial products. Phosphates contribute to drain field biomat formation.

Greywater-safe detergents (Oasis, ECOS Free & Clear, Charlie's Soap) are also septic-safe detergents โ€” they use plant-based surfactants and low-sodium formulas that are compatible with both landscape irrigation and septic treatment.
